Hi folks -- I'm getting flooded by Google redirects (e.g. clicksor, scour.com, happili.com) -- any help would be terrific to get rid of that scourge -- thx, Fred

1. I ran Malwarebytes, it did not create a log, at the end of the routine, it showed this message "no malicious item was detected".

2. I ran GMER and here is the gmer.log

Welcome to TechSpot! "Flooded by Google redirects!" Now that a new touch! If you have malware causingf a refirect, then you will have more redirects the more you search! "Flooded" is what's happening in my state today!

Please find the Mbam log and post:
If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:>>>>
[o] C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
========================
You have security programs on the system provided by Comcast. I'm not sure what they include to please run this: Security Check

Download Security Check by screen317 from HERE or HERE .
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
==========================================
Please uninstall or disable this program while I'm working with you. I'd rather it not run in the background. User Profile Hive Cleanup service. All you have to do is shut down properly.
==========================================
Download Combofix from HERE or HEREhttp://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe and save to the desktop
  • Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. It is recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode if needed.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
    whatnext.png
  • .Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware
  • .If Combofix asks you to update the program, allow
  • .Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • .Close any open browsers.
  • .Double click combofix.exe
    cf-icon.jpg
& follow the prompts to run.
  • When the scan completes , a report will be generated-it will open a text window. Please paste the C:\ComboFix.txt in next reply..
Re-enable your Antivirus software.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Flooded by Google redirects (cont/d)

Hi Bobbey -- thanks so much for your help -- here is my reply to your suggestions:

1. I re-ran the quick scan with Malwarebytes another time, and as before, it ended with a message saying:
“The scan complete succesfully. No malicious items were detected.”
I can’t find an mbam log – neither in Malbarebytes’ “Logs” tab, nor in “ c:/documents etc etc\mbam-log-date (time).txt” Both places are empty.
2. Here’s the notepad document checkup.txt from running Security Check:

3. I have now uninstalled the “User Profile Hive Cleanup Service” (I have no idea what that program was, or where it came from).

5. I believe that ComboFix removed my E:\autorun.inf (I have my backup disk connected to the E: drive). How do I restore that?

Many thanks for helping me with this nightmare!
Fred.

5. I believe that ComboFix removed my E:\autorun.inf (I have my backup disk connected to the E: drive). How do I restore that?

Usually, when Combofix deleted the autorun.ini on a different drive, it's because it's infected- so this isn't something you should restore. But you do need to disinfect it as you would do for a flash drive:

You may have a flash drive infection. These worms travel through your portable drives. If they have been connected to other machines, they may now be infected.

Please disinfect all movable drives
  1. Please download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  2. Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
Note: Some security programs will flag Flash_Disinfector as being some sort of malware, you can safely ignore these warnings
  3. The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  4. Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
  5. Reboot your computer when done.

Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder. It will help protect your drives from future infection.
=================
Please update the Adobe Reader and uninstall the current version in Add/remove Programs.
Visit this Adobe Reader site and make sure you have the most current update.

I notice that there are installs on same date as original logs. Such as 2011-03-31> c:\program files\Common Files\xing shared It describe itself as:
Shared Services, Outsourcing and Offshoring

Did you notice any problem begin after that?

Go on to next reply.

Flooded by Google redirects - continued

Hi Bobbye -- thanks for the continued guidance --

1. As you suggested, I downloaded and Flash Detector, and rebooted afterward. All worked OK.

2. My redirect virus problems started shortly before I first posted on TechSpot. I have no idea whether or not problems started right after the installs that happened around that time -- with regard to c:\program files\common files\xing shared, I don't know what program that might be -- I can't recall downloading it.

3. I ran the CS scripts as requested. Here is the log:

Fred, the Combofix log is okay- no bad entries. But I notice that you have quite a few entries set to Start on Boot. Many are unnecessary to start, then run in the background. This uses system resources that could be better used elsewhere. I also noticed that you have some unneeded, scheduled tasks:

The 2 below are for the mouse and keyboard. They surely don't update often enough for you to schedule them to contact the internet every day, maybe several times a day, looking for updates:
2011-03-06 c:\windows\Tasks\Microsoft_Hardware_Launch_IPoint_exe.job
- c:\program files\Microsoft IntelliPoint\ipoint.exe [2009-11-05 20:35]
2011-03-06 c:\windows\Tasks\Microsoft_Hardware_Launch_IType_exe.job
- c:\program files\Microsoft IntelliType Pro\itype.exe [2009-11-05 20:45]

The following is for Windows Defender. It should have an update set within the program itself:
2011-04-03 c:\windows\Tasks\MP Scheduled Scan.job
- c:\program files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe [2006-11-04 00:20]
.
The following 2 are for the RealUpgrade Launcher> It is an upgrade application for the media player RealPlayer. Not necessary.
2011-04-03 c:\windows\Tasks\RealUpgradeLogonTaskS-1-5-21-847799998-3084473379-597675746-1006.job
- c:\program files\Real\RealUpgrade\realupgrade.exe [2011-01-24 18:25]
2011-04-03 c:\windows\Tasks\RealUpgradeScheduledTaskS-1-5-21-847799998-3084473379-597675746-1006.job
- c:\program files\Real\RealUpgrade\realupgrade.exe [2011-01-24 18:25]
I recommend that you stop and remove these scheduled tasks:
Scheduled Tasks
Most of these found are usually auto-updates scheduled for programs that do not need them. They will make numerous internet connections every day, looking for updates that you can find manually. You want to keep these connection attempts as few as possible and then only if needed for the system. The only[/b[ auto-update I get is for the AV program.
Opening scheduled tasks to modify or delete them:
Access Scheduled Tasks with Click on Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Scheduled Tasks.
To change the settings for a task: right-click the Task> click Properties> do any of the following:
  1. To change the schedule for the task, click the Schedule tab.
  2. To customize the settings for the task, such as the maximum run time, idle time requirements, and power management options, click the Settings tab.
  3. To delete a task> right-click the task> click Delete.
  4. To prevent a task from running until you want to let it run again> right-click the task> Properties> On the General tab> clear the Enabled check box. Select the check box again to enable the task when you are ready to let the task scheduler run it again.
Maintenance Scheduled Tasks such as defrag are in a separate category.

Question: Do you know what this process is? Restore Point was set before the install:
RP2: 3/29/2011 9:16:28 PM - Installed %1 %2.
Have you uninstalled this?
RP5: 3/31/2011 10:41:04 AM - Uniblue RegistryBooster 2009
======================================
I'd like you to run the following:

Run Eset NOD32 Online AntiVirus scan HEREhttp://www.eset.eu/online-scanner
  1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  2. Click Start
  3. When asked, allow the Active X control to install
  4. Disable your current Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notification Tray icon near the clock.
  5. Click Start
  6. Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is checked
  7. Click Scan
  8. Wait for the scan to finish
  9. Click on "Copy to Clipboard"> (you won't see the 'clipboard')
  10. Click anywhere in the post where you want the logs to go, the do Ctrl V. The log will be sent from the clipboard and pasted in the post.
  11. Re-enable your Antivirus software.
NOTE: If you forget to copy to the clipboard you can find the log here:
C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please include this on your post.
==========================================
Download HijackThis http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/hijackthis/HijackThis.zipand save to your desktop.
  • Extract it to a directory on your hard drive called c:\HijackThis.
  • Then navigate to that directory and double-click on the hijackthis.exe file.
  • When started click on the Scan button and then the Save Log button to create a log of your information.
  • The log file and then the log will open in notepad. Be sure to click on Format> Uncheck Word Wrap when you open Notepad
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and paste (Ctrl+V) the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Thanks for all your guidance, Bobbye!
1. I took care of the startup/boot entries and the scheduled update settings as per your suggestions.
2. You asked: Do you know what this process is? Restore Point was set before the install:
RP2: 3/29/2011 9:16:28 PM - Installed %1 %2.
I have no idea what that might refer to.
3. You asked: Have you uninstalled this?
RP5: 3/31/2011 10:41:04 AM - Uniblue RegistryBooster 2009
No, I did not uninstall RegistryBooster but ran the program around that time (it checks for errors etc. in the registry, and before doing so, it asks whether I want to back up the registry first.)
4. I ran Eset -- when it finished, a window popped up with a message saying in essence that nothing wrong was found. But there was no “Clip to Clipboard” option anywhere on the screen – only a button saying “Continue”. When I pressed that, a new screen appeared offering me to buy the product or get a 30day free trial, neither one of which interests me. I couldn’t get back to the prior screen so simply closed the window. In my C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\ file, there is no log.txt file either.
5. I downloaded and ran HijackThis as instructed. Here is the log:

That’s it for now. Thanks again for taking a look at this,
Fred.

One more thing

One more thing, Bobbye ... I haven't had google redirects for a while now ... it seems that whatever caused that problem has disappeared ... Fred

Okay, entries in HJT are okay. I do note that you still have multiple processes starting on boot, Auto-updates should be disabled except for the antivirus program: To include
Java
Real Player
QTask (updater for QTime)
And there are program running that should only be running if you are actively using the, To include:
Power Point
Word
Canon printer
InterVideo
Cyberlink
HP Printer/Scanner/Copier
You do not have to put printers/copiers/scanners, media players, camera processes to include bot digital and web cam, DVD burning programs to start on Boot. Some of these have Services set to Automatic Startup. They can safely be set to Manual startup to start when needed.
==========================================
All of the above is optional. The system is clean:
==========================================
Removing all of the tools we used and the files and folders they created
  • Uninstall ComboFix and all Backups of the files it deleted
  • Click START> then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    CF_Uninstall-1.jpg
  • Download OTCleanIt by OldTimer and save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTC attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

Note: If any tool, file or folder (belonging to the program we have used) hasn't been deleted, please delete it manually.

  • You should now set a new Restore Point and remove the old restore points to prevent infection from any previous Restore Points.
  • Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools
  • Click "System Restore".
  • Choose "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next".
  • Give the Restore Point a name> click "Create".
  • Go back and follow the path to > System Tools.
    [*]Choose Disc Cleanup
[*]Click "OK" to select the partition or drive you want.
    [*]Click the "More Options" Tab.
[*]Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous Restore Points except the newly created one.

Empty the Recycle Bin
=========================
Be sure to keep the following updated and remove any outdated versions. Additionally, neither need to start on boot or have an auto-updater running:
1. Java: Check this site .Java Updates
2. Adobe Reader: Visit this site. Adobe Reader Updates

Many thanks for all help, Bobbye. It was terrific to have you guide me in cleaning out my system thoroughly. No more Google redirects, I hope ... what a pain that problem was. All the best, Fred

You're very welcome Fred. Glad to help. Here's a bit of help to keep the system clean:

Tips for added security and safer browsing: (Links are in Bold Blue)
  1. Browser Security
    [o] Safe Settings
[o] ZonedOut. This manages the Zones in Internet Explorer. (For IE7 and IE8, Windows 2000 thru Vista. No Windows 7)
    [o] Replace the Host Files
[o] Google Toolbar Pop Up Blocker
[o]Web of Trust (WOT) Site Advisor. Traffic-light rating symbols show which rate the site for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy, Child Safety.
  2. Have layered Security:
[o]Antivirus :(only one):Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Avira-AntiVir-Personal-Free-Antivirus
    [o]Avast Free Version
[o]Firewall (only one): Use bi-directional firewall. Both of the following programs are free and known to be good:
    [o]Comodo
    [o]Zone Alarm
  3. Antimalware: I recommend all of the following:
[o]Spywareblaster: SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX.
    [o]Spybot Search & Destroy
  4. Stay current on Updates:
[o] Microsoft Download Sitefrequently. All updates marked Critical and the current SP updates.
[o]Adobe Reader Install current, uninstall old.
[o]Java Updates Install current, uninstall old.
  5. Tracking Cookies
    Reset Cookie:
[o]For Internet Explorer: Internet Options (through Tools or Control Panel) Privacy tab> Advanced button> check 'override automatic Cookie handling'> check 'accept first party Cookies'> check 'Block third party Cookies'> check 'allow per session Cookies'> Apply> OK.
[o]For Firefox: Tools> Options> Privacy> Cookies> check ‘accept Cookies from Sites’> Uncheck 'accept third party Cookies'> Set Keep until 'they expire'. This will allow you to keep Cookies for registered sites and prevent or remove others. (Note: for Firefox v3.5, after Privacy click on 'use custom settings for History.')
I suggest using the following two add-on for Firefox. They will prevent the Tracking Cookies that come from ads and banners and other sources:
    AdBlock Plus
    Easy List
[o]For Chrome: Tools> Options> Under The Hood> Privacy Section> CHECK 'Restrict how third party Cookies can be used'> Close.
  6. Do regular Maintenance
    [o] Temporary File Cleaner
  7. Restore Points:
    [o]See System Restore Guide
  8. Safe Email Handling
[o] Don't open email from anyone you don't know.
[o] Don't open Attachments in the email. Safe to your desktop and scan for viruses using a right click
[o] Don't leave your personal email address on the internet. Have a separate email account at one of the free web-based emails like Yahoo.
Please let me know if you find any bad link.
